Can’t Get Enough Portuguese?

Great Food and Wine!

This was not my first trip to Portugal. Piri Piri in Hoboken, New Jersey was my virgin voyage into the culture and cuisine last year. They are mostly known for Port and Paella, but the food notations extends as far as the Italian or French cuisine and culture. One of the favorite foods of Spain and Portugal is seafood, so I am looking forward to visiting the actual country year and sharing first hand. Until then New Jersey offers up some pretty nice Portugeues choices.

The Ironbound District of Newark, New Jersey is filled with over a hundred Portuguese restaurants. I am excited to give a few more the chance to show off their kitchen skills. Many of them are BYO, ripe for wine tasting groups abound. Just what we had in mind when we got our invitation from the northern chapter of Women For Winesense.

Zita Keeley is the Chapter President, and organizer for Women For Winesense. As many wine clubs go- its a not for profit ranging from no knowledge friendly to knowledgeable with no snobbery. The organization is located in quite a few other states in our country, but I know first hand being a former member here in New Jersey, she goes out of her way to bring you great wine education paired with a good meal.

The groups administrators discuss the four wine’s varietal’s-

MENU/WINES

Red: J Portugal Ramos Vila Santa Trincadeira 07
100% Trincadeira (beautiful with all dishes, light, including seafood and chicken!)

Appetizers-

Whites:
Lagoalva Espirito Branco 08
Grapes- Sauvignon Blanc, Alvarinho, Verdelho, Fernao Pires and Arinto

J Portugal Ramos Vila Santa Branco 08
Antao Vaz, Arinto, and Verdelho (grape from my Madeira below)

Rose: Lagoalva Espirito Rose 08
Grapes- Syrah and Touriga Nacional (went with all the dishes well)

Portuguese Sausage
Sliced sausage

Clams in green or red sauce
Stew clams in garlic and cilantro

Shrimp in garlic
Shrimp Sauteed with garlic

Stuffed Mushroom (Bravo! on these)
Mushrooms stuffed with crab meat and cream cheese

Now the remaining whites and rose offered to taste with items listed in the photograph above-

Dessert- Citrus Cake and Flan (Hubby graciously poured up a small taste of our Blandy’s Madeira)
